SUMMER IS EXTENDED THIS YEAR. DON’T MISS IT!

Argosy

If you work in one of the Goodman Real Estate buildings — from Pier 70, the Market Square or Pioneer Square — you get the shore side flavor of Seattle’s waterfront. With Seattle weather usually staying summery well into October, why not get a little more in depth look at our working waterfront? Seattle’s Argosy Cruises offers a variety of on-the-water experiences, with one of the most popular being a one-hour narrated harbor tour. Cruise Elliott Bay and hear about Seattle’s history while taking in the colorful waterfront, skyline, and shipping terminals. The magnificent Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges provide the backdrop. It’s a great way to spend an hour… maybe after work or on your lunch break. Cruises depart from Pier 54.

BBQ & GRILLING SAFETY

BBQ

DON’T DO THIS!

This post should be of particular interest to our valued tenants at Interbay WorkLofts who are enjoying their new courtyard grill! And this time of year ALL of us can benefit from these reminders of how to have a safe and tasty summer grilling experience!

Do:

1. Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your house. Farther is even better. This includes portions attached to your house like carports, garages and porches. Grills should not be used underneath wooden overhangs either, as the fire could flare up into the structure above. This applies to both charcoal and gas grills.

2. Clean your grill regularly. If you allow grease and fat to build up on your grill, they provide more fuel for a fire. Grease is a major source of flare-ups.

3. Check for gas leaks. You can make sure no gas is leaking from your gas grill by making a solution of half liquid dish soap and half water and rubbing it on the hoses and connections. Then, turn the gas on (with the grill lid open.) If the soap forms large bubbles, that’s a sign that the hoses have tiny holes or that the connections are not tight enough.

4. Keep decorations away from your grill. Decorations like hanging baskets, pillows and umbrellas look pretty AND provide fuel for a fire. To make matters worse, today’s decor is mostly made of artificial fibers that burn fast and hot, making this tip even more important.

5. Keep a spray bottle of water handy. That way, if you have a minor flare-up you can spray it with the water to instantly calm it. The bonus of this tip is that water won’t harm your food, so dinner won’t be ruined!

6. Keep a fire extinguisher within a couple steps of your grill. And KNOW HOW TO USE IT. If you are unsure how to use the extinguisher, don’t waste time fiddling with it before calling 911. Firefighters say many fire deaths occur when people try to fight a fire themselves instead of calling for expert help and letting the fire department do its job.

Don’t:

7. Turn on the gas while your grill lid is closed. NEVER do this. It causes gas to build up inside your grill, and when you do light it and open it, a fireball can explode in your face. Click here to see our demonstration.

8. Leave a grill unattended. Fires double in size every minute. Plan ahead so that all of your other food prep chores are done and you can focus on grilling.

9. Overload your grill with food. This applies especially fatty meats. The basic reason for this tip is that if too much fat drips on the flames at once, it can cause a large flare-up that could light nearby things on fire.

10. Use a grill indoors. People often think it will be safe to use a grill, especially a small one, indoors. NOT TRUE. In addition to the fire hazard, grills release carbon monoxide, the deadly colorless, odorless gas. That gas needs to vent in fresh air or it can kill you, your family and pets.

GET OUT OF TOWN!

It’s summer for heavens sake! What are you still doing in the office? If you’re looking for some weekend or vacation adventure, here are some of our very favorite “off the beaten tracks” activities to add some spark to your summer!

Head to Bellingham or Portland on the very cool and comfortable BOLT BUS. You’ll ride in air-conditioned luxury with Wi-Fi, and you’ll get change back from your twenty-dollar bill!

Every morning the Victoria Clipper takes off from its waterfront pier for the romantic journey to historic Victoria. Spend the day (or three) walking about the historic town, enjoying high tea at the Empress, then cruise your way back to Seattle.

If you like to be off the beaten path… for fun or for a business or social event, check out the radical Snoqualmie Tree-House Point. Your summer plans will definitely be “up in the air”.

GO SUN CRAZY AT THE FREMONT FAIR SOLSTICE WEEKEND!

Fremont Fair & Solstice Parade – June 20th – 22nd

www.fremontfair.com

The annual Fremont Fair, over Solstice weekend, is a time when this quirky corner of the city gets even a bit more nuts. Centered on a giant street fair, the Solstice celebratory event includes concerts, entertainment and amazing street food for a full weekend of fun. Some of the main attractions are music on the Waterfront Stage, buskers, magicians, jugglers, group yoga, the Dog Parade on Sunday, and an Art Car Blow-out. And don’t miss the big Solstice Parade on Saturday, which over the years has attracted some bicyclists who seem to think it’s a “clothing optional” soiree!

For a great time get to Fremont sometime over this great weekend.

ART FOR THE MASSES

Art for the Masses

FREE and open to the public!

So how many think the Seattle Art Museum is a place where one goes to stare at images they don’t understand while they feign great interest and depth of knowledge. That’s not the right “picture”. In fact, SAM has programs year ‘round that bring art to the people in fun, exciting and accessible programs. One of our favorite programs happens right next door to Pier 70. Throughout the month of July, SAM takes over the Olympic Sculpture Park with programs of live music, yoga and art making.

“Catch live music, dance ‘til dusk, enjoy food from Seattle’s best food trucks, do yoga in the park, make art, or go on a tour. When you’re ready to take it easy, sprawl out under monumental sculptures like Alexander Calder’s The Eagle or take a quiet walk with breathtaking views of the mountains and water” says our Art Museum in its friendliest voice.

Thursday Starting in July – 6pm to 9pm live bands on the lawn, art making activities and tours

Saturday Starting in July 10am – 3pm Sketch outdoors

Saturday starting in July 10:30am -11:30am Yoga in the park

Farmers Markets Now Open

Farmers Market

June marks the beginning peak season for farmers markets around our great region. As spring planted produce and ripening fruits begin to show up on the farmers table this time of year, our menu options explode. A few minutes spent in a local farmers market is a good start, not only to good food, but also to a more connected way of life. Take the opportunity to get to know the farmers and producers who grow your food. Ask for recipes and cooking tips. Find out what’s going to be ripe and coming to market over the next few weeks. Take the time to say “Hi” to your neighbors. Share stories and get to know your community better. In many places, the neighborhood Farmers Market has become the new “town square”. See you there!
